The grounded containership MSC Baltic III has been moved about 53 m toward shore at Wild Cove on Newfoundland’s west coast as crews continue preparations to dismantle the damaged vessel on land.

MSC Baltic III ran aground in February 2025 after losing power during severe weather. All 20 crew members were safely evacuated by helicopter. The vessel sustained heavy structural damage and became firmly lodged against the shoreline. The plan to refloat the ship was subsequently changed to one involving its gradual movement ashore for dismantling.

The operation to pull MSC Baltic III toward land began on 31 July. Crews are conducting the work during high tides, when increased buoyancy helps move the wreck.

About 4,200 tonnes of material has been removed from the vessel, representing roughly 40% of its total tonnage. MSC Baltic III originally carried 472 containers, of which 471 have been taken off. One badly damaged container will remain with the wreck until it reaches shore.

A temporary gangway now provides access to the vessel, replacing the cableway used earlier in the operation. A scrap pad has also been built on the shoreline to support a lightering crane.

Environmental monitoring is continuing at the site. Daily inspections have detected small amounts of tar balls and oily coatings, along with a slight sheen near the wreck. Residual fuel remains in the holds, and authorities expect some pollution during the operation. Absorbent boom and response teams are in place.

Additional safety measures were required during earlier work because of hydrogen sulfide from submerged containers. Officials said the gas did not pose a risk to the public.

The Canadian Coast Guard continues to oversee the operation and has urged the public to stay away from the site. Worker safety and environmental protection remain the priorities as MSC Baltic III is moved ashore for dismantling.
