Samsung Heavy Industries is expanding partnerships to support the commercialization of Floating Data Centers (FDCs), as demand for AI-driven data center infrastructure continues to grow.
The company said conventional land-based data centers are facing increasing challenges, including limited site availability, power constraints, and cooling efficiency. FDCs are being developed as an alternative by deploying data centers on rivers or in offshore environments.
Samsung Heavy Industries said FDCs could help address these constraints while enabling more flexible and scalable infrastructure development.
Following the Approval in Principle (AiP) for its 50MW-class FDC design from ABS and Lloyd’s Register at DCD Connect Virginia 2026, the company has continued to expand partnerships across technology development, investment, market validation, and regulatory collaboration.
The company is working with ABB on power system development and with Mouserian on U.S. market initiatives. It has also formed strategic partnerships with Capital, Lloyd’s Register, LR Advisory, and Supermicro to build the ecosystem needed to bring FDCs closer to commercialization.
By extending its shipbuilding expertise into the digital infrastructure sector, Samsung Heavy Industries said it is preparing for future opportunities in the data center market.
