Samsung Heavy Industries has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with Sargent & Lundy to jointly develop a standardized Floating Small Modular Reactor platform.

The planned FSMR platform will not be tied to a specific reactor technology, allowing it to accommodate different reactor designs and provide customers with broader technology options.

The two companies will cooperate on platform development, licensing support, construction planning and deployment strategies.

They will also work to align the platform with evolving U.S. and international regulatory requirements.

The agreement combines Samsung Heavy Industries’ offshore EPC capabilities with Sargent & Lundy’s nuclear engineering and design expertise.

Samsung Heavy Industries said it will continue developing offshore energy solutions as demand for carbon-free power grows, including demand associated with AI data centres and expanding energy needs.
