PTTEP has completed Thailand’s first total reuse of a decommissioned petroleum wellhead platform by redeploying the entire structure at the Funan field under the G1/61 Project.
The Jakrawan K wellhead platform, known as JKWK, was relocated and reinstalled within the same field. The reused structure included the topside, jacket and selected pile sections.
The work was completed in six months, compared with approximately 20 months for the construction and installation of a new platform. This reduced the overall schedule by around 70%.
PTTEP said the reuse approach also lowered construction costs by approximately 35–50% compared with building an entirely new wellhead platform.
The company expects the approach to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3,270 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per platform. The reduction results from lower demand for steel and other equipment required to construct a new platform.
PTTEP used the Wet Tow method to relocate the jacket. The method helped reduce energy consumption and minimize impacts on marine life attached to the platform structure.
Chief Executive Officer Montri Rawanchaikul said structurally sound and safe wellhead platforms can be reused after petroleum resources in a field have been depleted. He said the project applied circular economy principles to extend the use of existing assets, shorten execution schedules and reduce demand for new materials.
PTTEP expects to reuse approximately 10 additional wellhead platforms between 2027 and 2029. The plan covers platforms that remain structurally sound and have passed safety assessments.
