GMI Awards eCap Marine Systems Contract for Two Hydrogen Bulk Carriers

GMI has placed a new order with eCap Marine for hydrogen-based power systems to be installed on two new bulk carriers planned for operation from 2029.

The two vessels will be built by Showgule Shipyards Ltd. in India. Each newbuild will have a deadweight capacity of about 3,000 DWT and is intended mainly for service along the Norwegian coast.

eCap Marine will equip both vessels with its integrated eCap H2EPS solution. The supply package includes compressed hydrogen storage systems, PEM fuel cells with a rated output of 1.2 MW for each vessel, and the power management, control and safety systems required for maritime use.

The latest contract follows other hydrogen shipping projects already being carried out by GMI and eCap Marine.

Torstein Holvik, CEO of GMI, said the two new vessels support the company’s ambition to become a leading owner of hydrogen-powered ships.

Lars Ravens, Managing Director of eCap Marine, said the additional order reflects confidence in hydrogen for maritime applications. He added that experience from earlier projects will be applied to the two newbuilds.
