CIMC Raffles launched an offshore hydrogen platform at Jiangmen in China’s Guangdong province on 13 October 2026. Named Shenhai Hydrogen Energy No. 1, the semi-submersible unit is designed to convert electricity generated by offshore wind into hydrogen.

Preparations are under way to deploy the platform in the South China Sea. The builder claims that no semi-submersible wind-to-hydrogen platform has previously been launched worldwide.

The platform carries a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser and three types of hydrogen storage system. These installations will allow equipment to be tested for suitability in a marine environment. Its electrical configuration accommodates both grid-connected and off-grid operation.

For work in shallow waters, the unit uses a disconnectable multi-point mooring system. CIMC Raffles says the structure is designed to withstand sea conditions with a 50-year return period. Motion-suppression technology is intended to sustain electrolyser operation during rough weather.

The platform also incorporates remote monitoring to support unattended operation and maintenance.

According to CIMC Raffles, the unit has completed classification and statutory maritime inspections by China Classification Society (CCS). The builder says it is the first Chinese project of this type to complete both inspection processes.

The platform builds on the company’s Yantai pilot project combining offshore hydrogen, ammonia and methanol technologies. It forms part of CIMC Raffles’ efforts to expand its marine equipment business from oil and gas into renewable energy.
