Boskalis has completed a major marine work package on the Southsea coastal defense project in Portsmouth, a scheme described as the largest coastal protection program undertaken in the United Kingdom.
The work was carried out by Boskalis Westminster Ltd. in a joint venture with VolkerStevin. More than 600,000 m³ of sand and shingle were placed along the Southsea frontage to strengthen the coastline and provide wider beach space for public use.
The trailing suction hopper dredgers Sospan Dau, Strandway, and Gateway were used during the campaign. Gateway completed the final shingle placement, bringing the beach nourishment phase at sea to an end.
The scope also included rock revetment along the embankment to improve flood defense. The wider project combines coastal protection with public infrastructure, including a redesigned promenade.
Although Boskalis has largely finished its marine works, the joint venture will remain on site. VolkerStevin will continue the remaining civil engineering works over the next two years, while Boskalis will support the project.
The scheme is being delivered with Coastal Partners and Portsmouth City Council, reflecting the role of coordinated marine and civil engineering in coastal resilience projects.
