The Tupi asset in the pre-salt Santos Basin has produced a cumulative 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), a level no other Petrobras asset has reached during the company’s 73-year history.

The production figure coincides with Petrobras marking 20 years of operations in the pre-salt area. Tupi became the first pre-salt system to start commercial production in 2010, following the development of a new exploration model and technologies required for operations in the area.

Average production from Tupi has again exceeded 1 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) this year. The asset first reached that level in 2019.

The pre-salt is currently the main production source for Petrobras. Under the company’s 2026–30 Business Plan, the area could account for up to 82% of total production during the period.

Total oil and gas production through 2030 is projected at between 3.1 million and 3.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. The plan includes measures focused on reservoir potential, production efficiency, water injection efficiency and the identification of new opportunities.

The pre-salt accounts for 28 of the 57 production platforms operated by Petrobras. The area reached cumulative oil production of 7 billion barrels in January 2025.

Development of the pre-salt required Petrobras to address technological challenges associated with ultra-deepwater operations. Sylvia Anjos, Director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, said the area combines large reserves, high productivity, lower-carbon-intensity oil and production efficiency.

The Tupi asset is operated by Petrobras in partnership with Shell and Petrogal Brasil. PPSA represents the Federal Government in the Tupi Shared Deposit.
