Canada’s offshore energy regulator is reviewing a crude oil release on the Hibernia Platform after a sludge pump failure led to an internal spill during loading preparations.
The incident occurred on 12 May 2026 at about 11:00 a.m., while operations personnel were preparing to load crude oil to a tanker. The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator, or C-NLOER, publicly disclosed the incident on 26 June 2026.
Personnel on Level 7 of the Utility Shaft reported excessive vibration and noise before gas detection was recorded. The source was later identified as a sludge pump after its low point drain sheared off. About 1,576 litres of crude oil were released inside the platform.
Workers isolated the pump by manually closing valves. The release was contained within the facility, and no oil reached the sea. No injuries were reported.
C-NLOER classified the incident as a major hydrocarbon release because of the volume involved. The regulator also identified the event as having potential for fire, explosion and fatality.
Hibernia Management and Development Company reported the incident to C-NLOER on 12 May 2026 and submitted a preliminary investigation report on 27 May 2026. The regulator has requested more information from the company as it reviews the cause of the incident, the response and possible next steps.
The final investigation report remains pending. The Hibernia Platform operates about 315 km southeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin.
