A 4,500 t module for Woodside Energy’s Pluto LNG Train 1 modifications project has arrived in Karratha, Western Australia, aboard heavy-cargo carrier Dongbang Giant No.6, completing the delivery of the project’s three major modules.
Standing about ten storeys high, the final module was fabricated in Thailand over a two-year period by Woodside Energy’s project team and contractors. The company said the structure is among the heaviest modules delivered to the Pilbara.
The shipment originated from Laem Chabang, Thailand, where all three modules for the Pluto Train 1 modifications were fabricated, according to KBR. The engineering contractor said the project uses three modules incorporating structural decks, equipment and pipework.
Dongbang Giant No.6 is a Korean-registered heavy-cargo carrier with a deadweight of 15,016 t. Dongbang’s vessel particulars list the ship at 152.5 m long and 40 m wide, with a free deck measuring 125 m by 40 m.
AIS port records show Dongbang Giant No.6 departed Laem Chabang on 24 June 2026 and arrived at Dampier on 11 July 2026. The vessel’s recorded trip history identifies Laem Chabang to Dampier as the corresponding voyage.
The modules form part of modifications to the existing Pluto LNG Train 1 facility near Karratha. The work is intended to enable the train to process gas from the Scarborough Project once the modifications are completed and processing capacity is available.
The modification scope includes a new natural gas liquids unit, nitrogen recycle compressor, Pluto gas custody metering and changes to supporting facilities. KBR said the natural gas liquids system was divided into two modules because it was too large to transport as a single structure.
KBR announced on 25 September 2023 that it had been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management contract for the Train 1 modifications. The modified train is designed to process up to 3 million tonnes per annum of Scarborough gas when capacity becomes available.
With the third module now at the Pluto site, Woodside Energy said the delivery represents another step in preparing Train 1 to process Scarborough gas.
