The Tanzania-flagged Golden Star 1 sank off Batam Island, Indonesia, after reportedly taking on water during a regional voyage between Singapore and Malaysia.

The 2,444 dwt container and general cargo vessel was built in 1995. It went down on 5 June, about 6 km off Batam, after leaving Singapore earlier that evening.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said all nine crew members were safely rescued by Indonesian authorities.

Reports said Golden Star 1 had 107 containers on board when the incident happened. As a safety measure, MPA issued navigational broadcasts asking vessels in the area to proceed with caution and report any drifting containers.

The sinking occurred in the Singapore Strait, a major maritime trade route. Vessel traffic through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore has not been affected, and no oil pollution has been reported in Singapore waters.

Further investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the reported water ingress.

The World Shipping Council recorded 576 containers lost at sea in 2024 from more than 250 million transported globally. Its 2026 report, covering 2025 figures, is expected soon.
