Finnish shipping company ESL Shipping has sold its multipurpose vessel M/S Kallio to a Norwegian buyer as part of its ongoing green fleet renewal program.

Built in 2006, Kallio has served in project and bulk cargo transport across Northern Europe. The sale supports ESL’s plan to modernize its fleet with new-generation, energy-efficient vessels designed to reduce emissions and meet future sustainability standards.

The transaction, valued at approximately €18 million, is expected to contribute positively to ESL’s balance sheet and fund its investment in next-generation Green Handy vessels. These new ships will feature ice class 1A capability and are being designed for operation with fossil-free propulsion technologies.

ESL confirmed that the Kallio has now been delivered to its new owner in Norway. The company noted that crew members previously assigned to Kallio will be redeployed within ESL’s existing fleet.

The company emphasized that the divestment aligns with its long-term strategy to transition toward a low-emission fleet while maintaining operational reliability and service continuity for customers.

In the interim, ESL plans to ensure sufficient carrying capacity through potential short-term vessel charters or acquisitions until the new vessels enter service within the next two years.
