Berg Propulsion has secured an order to supply propulsion packages for six 7,000 dwt multipurpose dry cargo vessels being built by Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry for UK shipowner and operator Carisbrooke Shipping.

Designed by Groot Ship Design, the vessels will measure 110 m in length and 15.45 m in breadth, with a design draught of 6.5 m. Deliveries are scheduled between Q3 2027 and Q1 2029.

The ships are based on the Groot 6600 XL design. The design has been modified to increase deadweight above 7,000 t while keeping gross tonnage below 5,000.

Each vessel will be equipped with Berg Propulsion’s MPP950 main propulsion system, a gearbox, shaft alternator, MPC800M remote-control system and Dynamic Drive software.

The MPC800M and Dynamic Drive systems calculate the most fuel-efficient balance between engine speed and propeller blade angle across different operating conditions and power modes.

The same propulsion solution has previously been used for 5,200 dwt and 5,900 dwt vessels delivered by Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry. Other vessel programs under construction include 7,350 dwt multipurpose vessels and 1,200 TEU container ships.

The latest contract continues the relationship between Berg Propulsion and Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry. The shipyard named Berg Propulsion its Supplier of the Year in 2024 and 2025, after which the companies signed an extended collaboration agreement.

Since mid-2021, Berg Propulsion has supplied systems for around 106 vessels built by Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry.

Mattias Hansson, Senior Global Sales Manager at Berg Propulsion, said the order reflected the customer’s requirements for energy efficiency, reliability, safety and worldwide service support.

Wu Zhong, Vice General Manager at Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry, said energy-efficient vessels were needed to reduce emissions and fuel costs while meeting international environmental standards.

William Zhiqing, Regional Sales Manager East at Berg Propulsion, said vessel power-speed performance depended on matching the main engine with the propulsion system. He also identified propeller design and control as factors affecting fuel consumption, noise and vibration.

Berg Propulsion’s other supply contracts in China cover RoRo vessels, multipurpose vessels, cement carriers, offshore vessels, tugboats, container vessels, chemical and product tankers, and DP-enabled ships. Some projects also include electrical systems integration and propulsion solutions for wind-assisted vessels.
