RWE has installed 22 of the 44 turbines planned for Nordseecluster A, bringing turbine installation at the 660 MW offshore wind project to the halfway point.
The project is located around 50 km north of the German island of Juist. Each Vestas turbine has a capacity of up to 15 MW and is transported to the site aboard DEME’s installation vessel Norse Wind.
All 44 turbines for Nordseecluster A are expected to be installed by the end of 2026. Testing and commissioning are being carried out progressively as installation continues.
The first turbine began generating electricity and feeding power into the grid at the end of July. Nordseecluster A is scheduled to be fully connected to the grid at the beginning of 2027.
Nordseecluster B, the second phase of the project, will add 900 MW of capacity. Production of its foundations has already started, with installation scheduled for 2027.
A further 60 Vestas turbines are planned for Nordseecluster B, with installation scheduled for 2028. Commercial operations are expected to begin in early 2029.
The two phases will have a combined capacity of 1.6 GW and are expected to generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of electricity annually.
RWE said the electricity will be used in customised energy solutions for industrial customers seeking to reduce emissions. Earlier in 2026, the company signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Amazon covering 110 MW from Nordseecluster B.
Nordseecluster is jointly owned by RWE, with a 51% share, and Norges Bank Investment Management, with a 49% share. RWE is responsible for construction and subsequent operation of the project.
