Jan De Nul’s new cable-laying vessel Fleeming Jenkin has begun sea trials, while sister vessel William Thomson is expected to follow.

The two identical vessels are 215 m long and have a cargo capacity of 28,000 t. Fleeming Jenkin was ordered from CMHI Haimen shipyard in October 2023, followed by William Thomson in May 2024.

During the sea trials, Fleeming Jenkin will undergo extensive testing before entering service.

Once operational, Fleeming Jenkin is scheduled to work on four 2 GW grid connections for TenneT. The vessel will install four cables together, covering more than 2,800 km of cable along a route of more than 700 km.

In 2028, one of the two vessels is also scheduled to install three 220 kV DC cables connecting the Princess Elisabeth energy island with shore.

Both vessels can operate on biofuel and green methanol. Their hybrid power plants combine generators with a 2.5 MWh battery and drive technology.
