A tanker off Pangkor Island in Perak has been detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on suspicion of anchoring without the necessary permission, according to reports citing the agency.

Enforcement officers located the vessel roughly 5.9 nautical miles off the island while operating in the Strait of Malacca. Inspectors also reported that the ship could not present insurance documents for maritime-claims liability.

Officers seized documents concerning the vessel. The master and chief engineer were taken to MMEA’s headquarters in Perak to assist investigators.

Five people were aboard: four Myanmar nationals and one Indonesian. The crew ranged in age from 34 to 59, and the master was among the Myanmar nationals, according to Sarawak Daily and Manifold Times.

The two publications reported that the case was being investigated under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952.
