According to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, one worker was killed at its subsidiary HD Hyundai Samho during berthing work alongside a quay on the 22nd. The worker was struck by a mooring rope while a vessel was being secured.

The accident occurred at about 11:25 a.m. at a quay inside the HD Hyundai Samho shipyard in Yeongam County, South Jeolla Province. The victim, a male worker in his 40s, was taken to hospital but was reported to have died the same day.

South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor plans to examine whether the Occupational Safety and Health Act or the Serious Accidents Punishment Act was violated. The Mokpo Coast Guard is also looking into the circumstances of the accident.

After the incident, HD Hyundai Samho halted all work involving mooring ropes and preserved the accident site. The company also issued a companywide safety alert and plans to conduct special safety and health training.
