Vattenfall is marketing 200 MW of balancing reserve capacity from the 416 MW Veja Mate offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, following the project’s qualification to participate in Germany’s electricity balancing market.
The company announced on 19 October 2026 that the wind farm had completed the required prequalification process within the control area of transmission system operator TenneT TSO.
According to Vattenfall, the 200 MW represents the largest amount of balancing reserve capacity offered by an offshore wind farm to date.
The qualification allows capacity from Veja Mate to be offered in the balancing market, where transmission system operators activate reserves to address short-term imbalances between electricity generation and consumption and maintain the grid frequency at 50 hertz.
Veja Mate is located approximately 95 kilometres northwest of Borkum Island in the German North Sea. The 416 MW wind farm comprises 67 turbines and is owned by a consortium consisting of Commerz Real, Ingka Group, KGAL Group and wpd invest.
Vattenfall acts as the wind farm’s direct electricity marketer, handling the sale and optimisation of its power generation.
The company also participates in the balancing market through pumped-storage hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 2.7 GW. It is pursuing further prequalification of renewable energy assets and battery storage systems for balancing services.
