A major milestone has been reached for India’s dredging industry with the successful launch of Dredge Godavari, the largest trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) ever built in the country. The vessel was launched at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), marking a significant achievement under India’s “Make in India” initiative.

Developed through collaboration between Royal IHC of the Netherlands and Cochin Shipyard, Dredge Godavari represents a new generation of advanced dredging vessels equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to boost India’s maritime self-reliance and capacity enhancement in port maintenance operations.

Royal IHC supplied the design and dredging equipment package, providing technical guidance throughout construction to integrate high-performance systems and ensure a smooth build process.

The Dredge Godavari is part of Royal IHC’s Beagle Series, optimized for efficient dredging, reduced fuel consumption, and advanced automation systems. The launch underscores growing cooperation between the Netherlands and India in maritime engineering and strengthens India’s domestic shipbuilding and dredging capability.

Industry officials described the event as a “new chapter in India’s maritime capability,” reflecting the country’s ambition to expand domestic production and technical expertise in specialized vessel design.
