HD Hyundai has delivered the world’s first Lashing-Free container ship, applying a hybrid version of its new container securing technology to a 13,000-TEU vessel delivered to CMA CGM.
The Lashing-Free system was partially applied to the vessel in a hybrid configuration. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed and validated the key technology, while HD Hyundai Samho carried out the detailed design and construction of the ship.
The system extends cell guides, normally used to support containers inside cargo holds, above the deck. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also developed a standardized portable bench to address structural limitations associated with conventional large hatch covers.
The portable bench has the same dimensions as a 40-foot container, allowing it to be handled by terminal cranes used for normal container operations. The company also developed a Twistlock Rooting System that secures containers positioned outside the cell guide area directly to the vessel structure.
According to HD Hyundai, the arrangement increases the weight of cargo that can be carried on deck by more than 10% compared with conventional vessels of the same type. The system is also designed to improve container stability during rough seas and strong winds.
Sea trials conducted in September showed lower vibration than conventional arrangements using hatch covers and lashing bridges, the company said.
The technology is intended to reduce manual lashing and unlashing work during container operations. HD Hyundai expects the system to support greater automation across container terminals and logistics operations connecting land and maritime transportation.
The company is also developing a next-generation version with weathertight features and plans to expand the technology to small- and medium-sized vessels.
The Lashing-Free technology was presented at the International Maritime Organization’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers in 2024 in connection with measures to prevent containers from being lost at sea.
