Amasus tug Eems Warrior assisted the transport of the retired Walrus submarine to Amsterdam for dismantling. The company said its tug joined the operation from Den Helder and was photographed off IJmuiden during the passage.

The submarine was carried on a floating pontoon. In its report dated 16 October 2026, the Dutch Ministry of Defence said a specialist transport and scrapping company handled the move, supervised by its materiel and IT command, COMMIT. The voyage took less than a day.

Two to three months have been allocated for the dismantling work in Amsterdam. The vessel’s size requires it to be taken apart in sections. Recovered materials will be recycled, with some destined for melting down.

Walrus entered naval service in 1992 and was formally retired around three years ago. Reusable equipment had already been removed to help keep the remaining boats of its class operational.

Naval Group is building the replacement Orka-class submarines. The Dutch defence ministry expects deliveries to begin in 2033 and conclude in 2037.
