Baltic Power Finishes Transition Piece Installation

All 76 transition pieces have been installed at the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, completing the main works within the foundations package. The structures will connect the foundations with 15 MW turbines.

At the same time, installation of wind turbines, as well as export and inter-array cables, is progressing around 23 km off the Polish coast.

Transition pieces connect monopile foundations with wind turbines and offshore substations. Each bespoke unit measures about 20 m in height and weighs up to 350 tonnes.

The fabrication of the transition pieces also involved local manufacturing capacity. Factories in Żary, Niemodlin and Łęknica supplied secondary steel for the structures, using steel sourced mostly from Poland.

For this stage of the installation campaign, contractor Van Oord deployed the heavy lift vessel LONE. The vessel can transport up to four transition pieces per voyage, helping improve offshore installation efficiency. It is fitted with twin cranes with a combined lifting capacity of 2,000 tonnes, allowing safe and precise handling during installation.

Using a dynamic positioning system, LONE can maintain position alongside pre-installed monopiles without anchors or jack-up systems.
