ABS has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Persona AI to integrate humanoid robotics into shipyard operations, aiming to enhance both safety and productivity in the shipbuilding industry.

The partnership will focus on adapting Persona AI’s humanoid robots—drawing partly on NASA’s robotic hand technology—for complex shipyard tasks. Unlike traditional industrial robots, humanoid platforms are designed to operate in environments built for human workers, offering mobility and flexibility in confined or ergonomically difficult spaces.

As part of the agreement, ABS and Persona AI will carry out joint development projects that involve collecting data during shipbuilding activities. The information gathered will contribute to ABS standards on data quality and requirements for digital and remote survey techniques. These efforts are expected to guide future robot design while advancing certification and compliance processes.

John McDonald, ABS President and COO, emphasized the significance of the collaboration: “This reflects our commitment to innovation and safety, as we establish the standards that will enable humanoid robots to perform complex tasks reliably and securely in shipyard environments.”

Persona AI CEO Nic Radford described the agreement as a transformative step for shipbuilding, noting that humanoid robotics are moving from concept to practical application in one of the world’s most demanding industrial sectors.

The initiative builds on ABS’s long-standing expertise in classification and its investment in artificial intelligence for data evaluation. By combining robotics innovation with maritime safety standards, the project seeks to redefine how shipyards operate and compete in a rapidly evolving industry.
