Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have selected EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH (EEW SPC) to produce 69 monopile foundations for the first phase of the Zeevonk offshore wind project in the Dutch North Sea.
Production will take place at EEW Group’s facility in Rostock, Germany. The foundations are intended for the Zeevonk site, which is located 63 to 84 km from the Dutch coast.
The project will use a TP-less foundation design, with the wind turbine towers installed directly on the monopiles rather than on separate transition pieces. This reduces the amount of steel and other material required and also changes the logistics and installation scope.
One of the monopiles is planned to use steel with a lower CO₂ footprint. Recycled material is expected to account for a large share of the steel used for that foundation.
The 69 monopiles will support the first phase of Zeevonk, which is planned to provide 1 GW of offshore wind capacity to the Dutch electricity grid in 2029. A final investment decision has not yet been made for the project.
Zeevonk covers 650 km² and is planned in two phases. The second phase is scheduled for 2032 and is expected to add another 1 GW of wind capacity and 500 MW of system integration capacity.
The second phase also includes plans for an electrolyser at the Port of Rotterdam for green hydrogen production.
Zeevonk is owned by Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners through Energy Transition Fund I.
