The first transition piece has been installed at Vattenfall’s Nordlicht I offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The milestone follows the installation of the project’s first monopile in early July.

Under a contract awarded in 2024/2025, DEME is responsible for transporting and installing the monopiles and transition pieces.

The transition pieces are being manufactured by CS WIND Offshore in Aalborg. EEW Special Pipe Constructions (EEW SPC) is producing the monopiles in Rostock.

Nordlicht I will comprise 68 monopile foundations supporting 68 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines. The offshore wind farm will have a total capacity of 980 MW.

Nordlicht II, the second offshore wind farm in the 1.6 GW Nordlicht cluster, will have a capacity of 630 MW. It will comprise 44 Vestas 15 MW turbines installed on monopile foundations. EEW Special Pipe Constructions (EEW SPC) and CS WIND Offshore will supply the foundation components.

Construction of Nordlicht II is scheduled to begin next year. Nordlicht I is set to enter commercial operation in 2028, followed by Nordlicht II in 2029.

The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster is being built about 85 km north of the island of Borkum. Once fully commissioned, the two projects are expected to generate around 6 TWh of electricity annually.
