Boskalis will use its semi-submersible heavy transport vessel Trustee for a series of monopile deliveries supporting Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 offshore wind project in the United Kingdom.
Over the coming months, Trustee will make multiple voyages between Bilbao, Spain, and Teesworks in northeast England. The transport programme covers dozens of monopile foundations, with three units scheduled to be loaded on each voyage.
The monopiles average 90 m in length and weigh more than 1,600 tonnes each.
According to Boskalis vessel data, Trustee has an overall length of 216.79 m and a moulded breadth of 44.50 m. Its cargo deck measures 130.00 m by 44.50 m. The vessel has a deadweight capacity of 54,000 t and a listed trial speed of 15 knots.
The foundations are intended for Hornsea 3, a 2.9 GW offshore wind farm located about 160 km off the Yorkshire coast. The project will comprise 197 wind turbines and is expected to supply electricity to more than 3.3 million UK homes.
Ørsted took the final investment decision for Hornsea 3 in December 2023 and expects the project to be completed around the end of 2027. Ørsted describes the development as the world’s largest single offshore wind farm upon completion.
