HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has agreed to sell its Gunsan shipyard under a memorandum of agreement covering the site’s land, facilities and equipment.

The corporate filing said the transaction is being conducted with EcoPrime Marine Pacific, which will become the main shareholder of HJ Heavy. The final sale price will be set after due diligence and further negotiations among the parties.

For HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, the deal marks a significant expansion beyond its main yard in Yeongdo, Busan, where dock length has limited the size of vessels it can build. The company recently won its first order for 10,000 TEU container ships.

The Gunsan yard was built in 2010 and covers about 1.8 million square metres in the Gunsan National Industrial Complex. Operations were suspended in 2017 and partially restarted in 2022.

The facility is now used mainly for block production, with an annual output of about 100,000 tonnes. Reports said HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will continue to use the yard for block manufacturing for about three years after the sale. The company also plans to provide design services and technical support to HJ Shipbuilding & Construction for operating the site.

The yard has a 700 m dock, a 1,650 t Goliath crane and about 1,400 m of quay wall. It can build about 12 capesize bulk carriers a year.
