New Zealand began accepting applications on 19 October 2026 for its first offshore renewable energy feasibility permits, covering the designated Offshore Taranaki and Offshore Waikato / South Auckland areas.

Developers have until 5:00 pm NZST on 19 April 2027 to submit their applications. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) confirmed the start of the round following issuance of the Offshore Renewable Energy Feasibility Permit Application Round Notice 2026.

Feasibility permits allow developers to assess potential offshore wind projects within specified permit areas. Once that work is complete, a commercial permit and other necessary consents must be secured before construction and operation can proceed.

The round notice defines the areas available for applications and their boundaries. It also establishes the submission period, mandatory permit conditions and any restrictions governing applications, including eligible technology types.

Applicants must satisfy the Offshore Renewable Energy Act 2026, together with the Offshore Renewable Energy Regulations 2026 and the Offshore Renewable Energy (Levies) Regulations 2026. Compliance with the round notice is also required. Those granted permits must fulfil the relevant obligations and observe all mandatory conditions.

MBIE’s website provides details on eligibility, preparation of application documents and submission procedures.
