Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has handled three oversized industrial units totalling 1,452 tonnes in a specialised roll-off operation, including a 718-tonne PG Cooler destined for Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in the UAE.

A barge delivered the equipment to Mumbai from Dahej, Gujarat, on a coastal voyage. The consignment also included a 502-tonne Riser and Downcomer and a 232-tonne Steam Drum.

According to the port authority, the units exceeded what could be discharged using ship’s gear or shore cranes because of their size and weight. Roll-off handling was therefore used to move them ashore.

The transfer took place at a berth within the port’s lock gate. The authority said the calm water inside the gate provided the stability needed to keep the barge and quay aligned during unloading.

The equipment will be stored at Mumbai Port while awaiting a vessel for the onward voyage to Abu Dhabi.
