Grand Bahama Shipyard has brought its new Lucayan floating dry dock into full operation at its Freeport facility in The Bahamas, adding 130,000 tonnes of lifting capacity.
Measuring almost 414 m in length, the new dock is designed to accommodate large cruise ships and a range of commercial vessels. Grand Bahama Shipyard expects the first vessel to enter Lucayan in the coming weeks.
Lucayan was built in China by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipyard for Grand Bahama Shipyard. Its delivery to The Bahamas involved a heavy marine transport operation from Qingdao to Freeport.
The floating dock was divided into four sections for the voyage. Boskalis deployed its semi-submersible heavy transport vessels Blue Marlin and White Marlin to carry out two matching transport operations.
Each vessel carried a main dry dock section measuring more than 156 m in length, with a smaller section loaded above it. All four sections were discharged in Freeport for assembly into the complete floating dock.
Lucayan is the second new floating dock introduced at Grand Bahama Shipyard in 2026.
The first, East End, entered regular operation after Carnival Elation became the first vessel to use it. East End measures approximately 357 m in length and 70 m in width, with a lifting capacity of 93,500 tons.
East End was also built by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding in China. Its entry into service brought Grand Bahama Shipyard to a two-dock operating configuration.
With Lucayan now in full operation, the Freeport facility has three operating docks. The new dock will serve large cruise ships and commercial vessels.
