South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean has confirmed a deal worth 1.93 trillion won ($1.4 billion) with Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. for the construction of seven large LNG dual-fuel container ships.

Each vessel will have a capacity of 15,880 TEU and will be built at Hanwha’s Geoje shipyard, with deliveries scheduled by the first half of 2029.

A key feature of this project is the adoption of LNG fuel tanks designed for a pressure rating of 1.0 bar, compared with the industry’s current 0.7-bar standard. This upgrade is expected to allow safer and longer storage of vaporized gas.

This marks Hanwha Ocean’s first contract with Yang Ming and follows an earlier order from Evergreen in March, strengthening its foothold in Taiwan’s container shipping sector.

Hanwha Ocean’s CEO Kim Hee-cheul stated that the agreement reflects recognition of the company’s eco-friendly ship design technologies and its intent to expand leadership in the green shipbuilding market.
