The BYB OTHELLO grounding near Istanbul on 6 November followed a machinery failure. The 97 m general cargo ship (IMO 8660947) ran aground near Anadolu Feneri, at the Bosphorus’ northern entrance.

The Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM) said rough seas and poor weather ruled out an approach from the water. In its statement, the agency said shore-based rescue teams used a traditional breeches buoy to bring all 13 crew members ashore.

Anadolu Agency, citing a written statement by Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, reported that the first alert came at 02:41 and the vessel grounded at 03:56. The breeches-buoy system was set up at 06:12. The first crew member was evacuated at 06:28, and all 13 had been evacuated by 06:55. Uraloğlu said the crew were in good health and initial checks found no visible pollution at sea.

The Maritime Executive reported on 6 November that BYB OTHELLO remained aground at the time of publication.
