HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has signed a contract with Taean Wind Power covering the engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation and commissioning of the Taean offshore substation.

The offshore substation will support a planned 500 MW offshore wind farm in waters near Gauido-ri, Taean County, South Chungcheong Province. It will raise the voltage of electricity generated by the wind turbines before the power is transmitted to shore.

Taean Wind Power is a joint venture established by Korea Western Power, Singapore-based renewable energy company Vena Energy and Danish investment and development firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

The latest contract follows earlier agreements related to the project. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a preliminary design contract in March and a preferred-supplier contract in July.

The company had previously received basic design verification from DNV for its self-developed 500 MW offshore substation model. It completed detailed design verification in August, becoming the first domestic offshore substation project to have its design compliance and safety recognized under international regulations and standards.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said it plans to carry out the Taean offshore substation project using its accumulated offshore plant capabilities while pursuing further opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
