Maersk Selects Anemoi Rotor Sail for First Container Ship Installation

A.P. Moller – Maersk has selected Anemoi Marine Technologies to supply a Rotor Sail for an 8,700 TEU Maersk Lima-class container vessel, in what will be the first installation of Rotor Sail technology on a container ship.

Anemoi will design, manufacture and deliver one fixed Rotor Sail with a diameter of 5 m and a height of 35 m. The system will be integrated with the vessel’s existing onboard systems, with Anemoi supporting the engineering and installation work.

The Rotor Sail is scheduled to be fitted in mid-2027. The system will then be piloted during the vessel’s regular operations, which are expected to include voyages in the North and South Atlantic.

Rotor Sails use aerodynamic lift to generate additional thrust from wind. Under suitable operating conditions, the technology can help reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions.

Anemoi has previously installed Rotor Sails on other vessel types, including bulk carriers. The Maersk project will mark its first Rotor Sail installation on a container vessel.

Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, said the pilot would give the company practical experience with wind-assisted propulsion and allow it to assess the technology’s relevance for its fleet and container shipping more broadly.
