Sonangol and ANPG have confirmed positive appraisal results from the Katambi-2 offshore well in Block 24, with testing identifying productive gas and condensate intervals and good-quality reservoirs.
According to a joint statement issued on Thursday, the Katambi-2 appraisal well intersected two productive intervals. Initial well tests recorded a stabilised production rate of 41 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas and 1,160 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate.
The companies said the absence of water and hydrogen sulphide strengthened the economic viability of developing the discovery and highlighted its potential to support Angola’s national production, which is around 1 million bpd.
Preliminary testing indicated the well has the potential to produce more than 100 MMscfd of gas.
Katambi-2 is located near the Katambi-1 wildcat well in the Benguela Basin. BP drilled Katambi-1 more than a decade ago before relinquishing its interest after determining the discovery was not commercially viable.
At the time, Sonangol estimated the pre-salt discovery contained around 1.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent, consisting mainly of gas and condensate.
