Petrodec has launched the first commercial offshore campaign for its heavy lift jack-up vessel Obana, deploying the unit in the UK sector of the Southern North Sea for platform removal work contracted by Perenco UK.
The project begins at the Galahad platform in Block 48/12a. After removing the topside and steel jacket at the site, Obana will relocate to the nearby Amethyst field to dismantle three platform jackets identified as C1D, A2D and B1D. Structures recovered during the campaign will be transported to the Netherlands for recycling and disposal.
Built for large-scale offshore decommissioning work, Obana is designed to operate in water depths of up to 65 m. The vessel is equipped with a 2,000 t main crane and provides approximately 3,800 sq m of deck working space.
A key engineering feature is the vessel’s 12,000 t deck load capacity combined with a custom roller system. This arrangement enables large platform modules to be repositioned on deck while offshore, allowing multiple structures to be dismantled and transported during a single campaign without returning to port.
The six-legged vessel was created by combining two retired heavy-duty drilling rigs, Brage and Gabrus, with a newly fabricated midsection built in Dubai. Final integration was completed at Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam. According to the source, around 85% of the vessel’s steel structure is derived from recycled material.
Following the completion of the Perenco UK campaign, Petrodec plans to deploy Obana on additional projects involving the removal of aging offshore infrastructure across the North Sea.
