The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has awarded Approval in Principle (AIP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its SnapWind Float, a newly developed semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbine platform.

The SnapWind Float is engineered to support next-generation 15MW offshore wind turbines and incorporates a passive ballast system alongside optimized mooring lines. This design aims to ensure stability in harsh marine environments while reducing operational risks. According to SHI, the concept emphasizes execution-oriented efficiency, making it suitable for offshore wind farm projects in regions with limited skilled labor, heavy lifting equipment, and workspace availability.

ABS completed its design review of the SnapWind Float based on class rules and prevailing industry standards. The classification society emphasized that floating offshore wind platforms represent an important opportunity for advancing renewable offshore energy and highlighted the significance of certifying innovative designs to enhance safety at sea.

SHI described the SnapWind Float as a solution that combines the company’s EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) expertise with a focus on commercial viability. By addressing both technical and economic challenges, SHI expects the design to contribute to accelerating the deployment of floating offshore wind technology.
