Boskalis is advancing coastal protection works on the Dutch Wadden Island of Ameland, where its trailing suction hopper dredger Freeway is depositing around 2.5 million cubic meters of sand to reinforce the western beaches and eastern foreshore. The material is dredged from a designated North Sea borrow area, which carries potential risks of unexploded ordnance (UXO).

To mitigate this hazard, Boskalis Hirdes EOD Services deployed the Kamara, a specialized vessel equipped to locate, identify, and clear UXOs from the seabed. By securing the borrow area, the Kamara ensured safe dredging operations for the Freeway, highlighting the company’s ability to combine dredging expertise with advanced safety and environmental practices.

Boskalis stated that the project reflects its NINA (No Injuries, No Accidents) philosophy, emphasizing safe and sustainable execution of coastal defense projects. Both vessels are expected to continue contributing to the protection of the Dutch coastline against erosion and sea-level rise.
