On 13 August 2025, Van Oord’s trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Ariane successfully underwent its inaugural bunkering of Bio-LNG, marking a key advancement in the company’s decarbonisation efforts.

The bunkering operation took place on the Elbe River in Germany and utilised Bio-LNG—a low-carbon alternative derived from renewable, biomass-based feedstocks such as municipal organic waste and agricultural residues. This strategic move supports Van Oord’s goal of reducing CO₂ emissions while encouraging the expansion and availability of sustainable marine fuels.

The Bio-LNG used was certified under the ISCC EU scheme, ensuring that the fuel meets rigorous sustainability, ecological, and social criteria that extend beyond the current EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) standards.

Van Oord emphasises that this development is aligned with its commitment to science-based emissions targets, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and consistent with the Paris Agreement’s objective to keep global temperature rise well below 1.5 °C. As part of this broader strategy, the company is investing in sustainable technologies, zero-emission electric equipment, and alternative fuel solutions. Through its Sustainable Supply Chain Programme, Van Oord also collaborates with clients and partners worldwide to foster green adoption across its operations.
