Foundation installation has been completed at the 1.5GW Baltica 2 offshore wind farm in Poland after Van Oord installed 111 monopiles across the project.
Of the total, 107 foundations are designated for wind turbines and four for offshore substations. Van Oord received the transport, installation and scour protection scope in 2024 and reported that the offshore campaign was finished on schedule.
The monopiles weigh about 1,900 tonnes each. They reach lengths of up to 100 m and have diameters between 9.5 m and 10.5 m.
For the offshore work, Van Oord deployed Svanen and Aeolus. Using both installation vessels allowed separate activities to be performed at the same time during the campaign.
Preparations covered several delivery options before offshore work started. The Baltica 2 team considered installation sequencing, vessel and component availability, logistics and coordination of offshore operations. The planning involved Ørsted’s offshore wind experience and Van Oord’s installation expertise.
Maurits den Broeder, managing director Offshore Energy at Van Oord, described the safe and on-schedule completion of the monopile work as an important milestone for Baltica 2 and Poland’s offshore wind development.
Baltica 2 is being developed jointly by PGE and Ørsted. Once operational, the 1.5GW project is expected to produce enough renewable electricity to supply around 2.5 million households in Poland.
The campaign follows Van Oord’s work on Baltic Power, which was its first offshore wind project in Poland. With the monopile scope finished, construction of Baltica 2 is continuing into its subsequent stages.
