Petrobras has identified an additional oil-bearing interval at the Morpho well offshore Brazil, extending the exploration findings beyond the hydrocarbons first reported there in August 2026.
In its 2 October announcement, the company said deeper drilling had encountered the new interval. Electrical logging, indications in rock and fluid samples supported the discovery.
Morpho, designated 1-BRSA-1405-APS, is located in block FZA-M-59 off Amapá, in the Foz do Amazonas Basin. The site has a water depth of 2,886 m. Petrobras operates the block with a 100% interest.
The drilling campaign is being carried out by Foresea’s drillship ODN II (NS-42). Work at the well had previously faced a drilling suspension in January following a loss of drilling fluid.
Samples from the newly identified interval are undergoing laboratory analysis, with the results to be combined with data collected during drilling. Separately, testing of the August discovery has confirmed good oil quality.
Chief executive Magda Chambriard told reporters that drilling was expected to conclude by the end of October. Petrobras also plans three additional wells in the area to assess the viability of commercial production.
The latest result adds a second discovery within the same exploration well, but resource size and commercial viability remain to be established. The company’s announcement did not provide a recoverable resource estimate. Evaluation of the identified formations will follow completion of drilling.
