COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation has approved a RMB 1.7 billion ($253 million) cash injection into its wholly owned subsidiary, Shanghai COSCO Shipping LNG Investment, following earlier investments in six LNG carrier newbuildings this year.
The decision was approved by the company’s board on 28 September 2026 and announced the following day. The funding will come from internal resources and is intended to improve Shanghai LNG’s capital structure and support its shipping operations. The company did not identify a specific shipbuilding project for the latest capital injection.
The investment follows a $340.3 million capital increase approved in January to support the construction of two 175,000 cu m LNG carriers.
In June, COSCO Shipping Energy also announced a separate RMB 6,445 million ($953 million) project involving four additional 175,000 cu m LNG carriers at Jiangnan Shipyard.
The June project includes a RMB 2,093 million capital contribution to Shanghai LNG. Deliveries of the four vessels are planned for 2029 and 2030, after which they will operate under seven-year time charter agreements with Shell Tankers (Singapore).
The group’s LNG carrier portfolio has expanded alongside its tanker business. According to its first-half 2026 figures, COSCO Shipping Energy had interests in 97 LNG carriers as of 30 June, including 66 operational vessels with a combined capacity of 11.2 million cu m and another 31 under construction.
The company also operated one additional bareboat-chartered LNG carrier with a capacity of 170,000 cu m.
At the same board meeting, COSCO Shipping Energy approved a delivery financing plan for an MR tanker. The company did not disclose the financing amount or identify the vessel.
