A fire aboard the Greek-flagged cargo Ro-Ro BLUE CARRIER 2 forced all 29 people on board to evacuate the vessel north of Mykonos on 25 September 2026.

The Hellenic Coast Guard said the vessel was about 4.5 nautical miles north of Mykonos and 7.5 nautical miles east of Tinos when the incident occurred. BLUE CARRIER 2 was operating a Piraeus-Syros-Vathy-Kos-Rhodes-Kos-Piraeus service and was carrying 166 trucks and 29 passenger cars.

According to Attica Ferries, the fire was reported at 08:57. The crew activated the vessel’s firefighting procedures and alerted the authorities before the evacuation was carried out.

The 28 crew members and one passenger, identified as a truck driver, left BLUE CARRIER 2 using two lifeboats. Shippax also reported that all 29 people aboard were evacuated safely. They were later transferred to a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol vessel and taken to the port of Tinos, with authorities reporting no health problems among those evacuated.

Coast Guard vessels, firefighting craft, tugs and salvage resources were deployed around the ship. Nearby port authorities also prepared pollution-response equipment as part of the operation.

Firefighting continued later on 25 September. eKathimerini reported that the situation had been brought under control but that the fire had not yet been fully extinguished. The salvage and firefighting tug AIGAION PELAGOS was deployed to assist, while a specialist salvage team was also expected to reach the vessel.

Following the evacuation, Attica Ferries said specialist contractors had been appointed to support environmental protection measures and the management of the vessel in coordination with the authorities.

According to Blue Star Ferries, BLUE CARRIER 2 was built in 1997 and measures 162.49 m in length and 25.60 m in width, with a listed service speed of 17 knots. Shippax reported that the vessel was originally built as CLEMENTINE before later joining Attica Group.
