Stillstrom by Maersk has signed a letter of intent with Semco Maritime for the manufacture and delivery of a local equipment room, or LER, for its offshore charging system.
The agreement was signed on 23 September 2026 during WindEnergy Hamburg. Semco Maritime had completed the design phase for the equipment room earlier in 2026.
The containerised LER will house equipment used for power handling, communications and safety functions. Its systems will include a transformer, medium-voltage switchgear, communications equipment, ventilation and fire safety equipment.
The unit can be installed on either a monopile or a hang-off structure. Electricity from an offshore wind farm will pass through the LER before being supplied to a vessel.
Siemens will act as a subcontractor for the switchgear and control systems. Semco Maritime and Siemens also signed a separate letter of intent during WindEnergy Hamburg.
Manufacturing is planned at Semco Maritime’s facility in Esbjerg, Denmark. Completion is targeted for spring 2027, while future production of the LER could also be supported from the company’s UK facilities.
Semco Maritime previously supported a yard trial carried out by Stillstrom by Maersk at the Esbjerg facility. The trial involved automated cable control while a vessel was operating on dynamic positioning.
