Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Hitachi Energy have secured a framework cooperation agreement with TenneT covering projects under the transmission system operator’s 2GW HVDC offshore wind programme.
The consortium will continue work on IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 in the Netherlands and begin two additional projects, Nederwiek 3 in the Netherlands and LanWin 5 in Germany. The agreement also covers two further projects and future opportunities under the programme.
The projects included in the framework have a combined transmission capacity of 8GW and will operate at 525 kV. They will transmit renewable electricity from the Dutch and German sectors of the North Sea to onshore power grids.
Under the engineering, procurement, construction and installation scope, L&T will deliver the offshore converter platforms and associated infrastructure. Hitachi Energy will provide its HVDC Light technology for power conversion and transmission.
L&T classified the award as an “ultra-mega” framework agreement, its category for projects valued at more than ₹15,000 crore.
The company said its offshore wind operations are supported by engineering centres in India and the UAE, global partnerships, a supply chain and modular fabrication facilities in Kattupalli.
The framework agreement follows L&T’s replacement of Petrofac in TenneT’s HVDC offshore wind programme around nine months earlier. TenneT terminated the part of the contract covering Petrofac’s scope after the company failed to meet its contractual obligations. The cancellation led to Petrofac Limited entering administration.
