Mammoet is transporting some of the largest offshore wind monopile foundations delivered to Canada’s Port of Argentia using a custom-engineered handling system.

The foundations arrived at the Newfoundland port aboard a Boskalis heavy transport vessel. After discharge at the quayside, each monopile is moved approximately 3 km to a nearby storage area, where it will remain until installation at an offshore wind project.

Each monopile is approximately 122 m long and weighs 2,473 t.

For the transport operation, Mammoet is using a bespoke jacking spacer and saddle system developed for large-diameter monopiles. The equipment is intended to improve handling efficiency as offshore wind foundations increase in size and weight.

The work has been taking place in challenging weather conditions at Port of Argentia. Moving the foundations from the quay to storage requires specialised transport equipment, engineered support systems and coordinated port operations.

Port of Argentia has become an important logistics hub for offshore renewable energy projects in Atlantic Canada, supporting the staging, storage and assembly of major wind farm components.
