HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said a delegation from India’s Tamil Nadu state government visited its Ulsan shipyard on 9 June to review vessel construction activities and production operations as plans for a new shipyard project continue to move forward.
The delegation was led by Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Keerthana Sampath. During the visit, officials inspected shipbuilding facilities and operational systems at the Ulsan yard.
HD Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in December last year covering the development of a new shipyard in the state. In April, the scope of cooperation was expanded to include India’s central government, strengthening the framework for establishing a local production base.
The project is progressing alongside India’s efforts to enhance the competitiveness of its maritime sector under the Make in India manufacturing initiative.
Tamil Nadu is regarded as one of India’s key industrial regions, with major automotive, electronics and heavy industry operations concentrated in the state. The region is also considered suitable for shipyard development due to its port infrastructure and logistics capabilities.
The Tamil Nadu government is understood to be preparing support measures for the project. These include a proposed incentive package covering tax benefits, subsidies, site development and construction of port hinterland infrastructure.
Industry observers expect a local production base in India to create opportunities for HD Hyundai as demand for merchant vessels and special-purpose ships increases in line with the country’s maritime industry development plans. The project could also support future expansion into ship maintenance, repair and overhaul activities.
An HD Hyundai Heavy Industries official said the minister’s visit demonstrated Tamil Nadu’s commitment to developing shipbuilding as a strategic industry. The company added that it will continue working-level discussions and communication with the state government to advance the project.
