The Strait of Malacca, a key yet heavily congested shipping lane, again highlights navigational risk after a reported contact between a large container ship and a towed barge on 25 December 2025.
During the night hours of 25 December 2025, the container vessel CMA CGM Niagara (IMO 9722675), 300 m long and 110,525 dwt, is reported to have struck the container-carrying barge Harbour Jupiter while transiting the Strait of Malacca.
At the time of the event, Harbour Jupiter was under tow to Sibu, Malaysia, behind the 26 m tug Harbour Dragon (MMSI 533132961). As CMA CGM Niagara closed on the tow, the ship reportedly lost control, sheared toward the barge, and hit its port side, resulting in structural damage to Harbour Jupiter.
There were no injury reports. All 25 people on CMA CGM Niagara and the 10 crew members working on Harbour Jupiter were said to be safe.
Authorities attended the scene, boarded the units, carried out technical surveys, and opened a formal inquiry into what happened.
The case underscores the operational risks at heavily trafficked chokepoints, such as the Strait of Malacca, and reinforces the need for strict navigation procedures, robust towage-risk management, and rapid incident response.
