Sumitomo Corporation has acquired a 33.3% stake in the Gwynt Glas Offshore Wind Farm, an up to 1.5 GW floating offshore wind project planned in the Celtic Sea off the United Kingdom.
The investment brings Sumitomo Corporation into the project alongside EDF power solutions UK and Ireland and Electricity Supply Board (ESB). Each of the three partners now holds a 33.3% interest in the development.
Gwynt Glas is planned approximately 40 km offshore in the Celtic Sea and covers the development, construction and operation of a floating offshore wind farm.
The consent application process is planned to begin in 2028, with commercial operation expected in the late 2030s.
The project marks Sumitomo Corporation’s first investment in floating offshore wind. The company made its first investment in a European offshore wind project in 2014 and has since participated in offshore wind development, construction and operation.
In 2025, Sumitomo Corporation signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding with the UK’s Office for Investment under the Department for Business and Trade, now the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, to promote business investment in the United Kingdom. The Gwynt Glas investment is one of the initiatives being pursued under that framework.
Under its Medium-Term Management Plan 2026, announced in May 2024, Sumitomo Corporation said it plans to allocate capital and management resources generated through business portfolio optimization to growth areas, including projects such as Gwynt Glas.
EDF power solutions UK and Ireland said the addition of Sumitomo Corporation brings further offshore wind development and investment experience to the project. ESB said it looks forward to working with Sumitomo Corporation alongside EDF power solutions UK and Ireland on Gwynt Glas.
