A man was taken to hospital after a reported collision between a ship and a dockside crane at the Port of Tyne in South Shields on 19 July 2026.
Northumbria Police received the report shortly after 13:00. The circumstances that led to the contact had not been determined, and officers continued their inquiries.
Emergency crews found a man with injuries at the port. He was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Police said his condition was not considered life-threatening.
Images from the scene showed the crane on its side and leaning against part of a container vessel. Eyewitness material identified the vessel as BG Orange, although police did not name the ship in their statement.
The North East Ambulance Service said it received the call at 13:02. Its response included three double-crewed ambulances, two clinical team leaders, a duty officer and three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles. The Great North Air Ambulance Service also provided support.
One HART vehicle remained at the site to assist Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.
A drone operator who arrived after the incident said several containers aboard BG Orange appeared to have shifted from their positions.
